The National Corvette Museum in Kentucky reopened today after a 30-feet-deep sinkhole opened up Wednesday morning, swallowing 8 Corvettes on display in the “Skydome.”

No one was hurt, but the whole museum was closed down as a safety precaution following the collapse around 5:44 AM.

Two of the cars – a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” – were on loan from General Motors. The rest were owned by the museum.

The above video shows a few Corvettes above the rubble while the rest are pinned beneath the debris.

The following cars were victims of the destruction:

  • 1993 ZR-1 Spyder
  • 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil”
  • 1962 Black Corvette
  • 1984 PPG Pace Car
  • 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
  • 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
  • 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
  • 2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

General Motors has vowed to restore any of the Corvettes that can be recovered. If you would like to contribute to the rebuilding of the Skydome Corvette display, visit the museum’s website here!

Chevrolet Targets Small Businesses at 2014 Chicago Auto Show

The 2014 Chicago Auto Show witnessed the unveiling of the City Express from Chevrolet this week.
The 2015 Chevy City Express makes its entrance at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.

The 2014 Chicago Auto Show welcomed Chevrolet yesterday as the automaker unveiled a smaller cargo van geared towards smaller businesses.

Chevy’s 2015 City Express guarantees consumers sufficient cargo room, strong fuel economy and fun driving for the long roads ahead.

Chevrolet teamed up with Nissan to use the car company’s NV200 to speed up the process of getting a smaller business van out on the market.

“We knew what we wanted to build, whether we built it ourselves or whether we sourced it from somebody else,” GM Director of Commercial Products Joyce Mattman said. “We looked at the van from Nissan, and we liked it a lot.”

Running on 131 horsepower, the van is powered by a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine and can haul 1,500 pounds.

No dollar amount has been set for the 2015 City Express, but it’s expected that the van will be in the same ballpark as the $23,000 Ford Transit and $21,000 Nissan NV200.

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu scored high on NHTSA’s frontal, side-impact and rollover crash tests.

The 2014 Malibu 5-Star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is another Chevy victory.

Undergoing severe testing procedures, the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu received high scores in the frontal, side-impact and rollover crash tests.

Chevy’s standard safety features for the 2014 Malibu include:

  • 10 airbags including knee airbags for driver and front passenger
  • Rollover protection
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Daytime running lights
  • Electronic stability control
  • OnStar service for six months

GM’s general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness, Gay Kent, states that safety is a top priority for the automaker.

“Safety is an increasingly important consideration for new vehicle buyers, especially for those in the midsize segment,” Kent said in a press release. “The customer is at the center of our day-to-day operations and when we design vehicles, it’s their safety that we have in mind.”

Chevrolet Sweeps the 2014 NAIAS Awards

Chevrolet took home two big 2014 NAIAS awards.
Chevrolet made quite a showing at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Chevy fans will not be disappointed at the Detroit Auto Show this year. Chevrolet took home the top 2014 NAIAS awards.

The automaker’s 2014 Corvette Stingray and Silverado truck took home top honors with Car of the Year and Truck of the Year.

The Stingray was a huge improvement on the last model with a better interior. Its performance was also better due to its 455 horsepower V8 engine. Its $51,000 also makes it one of the best value sports cars in its market.

Chevy’s Silverado truck has been praised by lots of critics, including Consumer Reports magazine. Its base v8-powered engine gets it an estimated 19 MPG overall. This fuel economy not only trumps the previous year Silverado, but it also outdoes the F-150.

It’s no wonder why these two vehicles are at the top of their class. A majority of 50 automotive journalists thought so.

Do you agree? Give us your thoughts on these two excellent vehicles.

Chevrolet Vehicles to Offer 4G LTE this Summer

4G LTE available in Chevrolets, starting this summer.
Thanks to 4G LTE, you will be able to access online information at high speeds in the comfort of Chevy cars.

Can’t get enough of technology, even when you are out on the road?

Chevrolet announced this week that they will be offering 4G LTE in its cars. This summer, Chevy will start this service with the Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt.

By the time the automaker rolls out its 2015 lineup, most of its American and Canadian vehicle will offer the connection.

This comes with a range of benefits for car occupants who need access on the Internet through their wireless devices.

  • Each car will allow multiple devices to be connected at the same time
  • Each car will act as a mobile hub for easier access to apps and other services
  • Data connection speed will be quick due to collaboration between Chevrolet and AT&T

While the OnStar 4G LTE will come with an additional cost not yet known, the payoff will be worth it.

Fans can expect the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado Heavy Duty editions, Spark and Spark EV to follow the same pattern after the summer.

2014 Camaro Z/28 Comes with a Price

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 is pricey, but it's a beauty as well.

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 comes at a price, and that was emphasized this week on a financial note.

Chevrolet announced this week that the 2014 Camaro Z/28 will cost $75,000, including destination fees and gas-guzzler tax.

The reason for the high price is due to the fact that the Camaro is built for one thing, and that is high speed. Its 7.0-liter aluminum V8 engine pumps out 500 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The six-speed manual is one of the most expensive Chevrolet cars on the market. The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 only cost more ($76,595).

Chevrolet will take orders for the 2014 Camaro Z/28 later this month. Customers can expect to start seeing the Camaros on dealer lots in the spring just in time for racing season.

New Year’s Day is Christmas for Car Thieves

New Year's Day is Christmas for car thieves.
Watch out for this guy at this time of year!

While Christmas for car thieves tends to be a day off from their illegal behaviors, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are quite the contrary.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s study from 2012 suggests that no car is safe when the clock hits midnight. On January 1, 2013, 2,228 cars were stolen, and 2,152 car thefts reportedly happened the day before.

It’s important that car owners be on high alert at this time of year. Here are some tips to keeping your car out of the wrong hands.

  • Park in well-lit areas. Car thieves are more likely to break into a car where they can’t be seen.
  • Hide your valuables. Stow personal items away in a compartment or in the trunk.
  • Keep your car locked. Whether you’re driving, warming up your car or leaving it for one second, don’t leave it unlocked in your absence.
  • Install an anti-theft system. A security program is one of the best ways you can prevent your car from being stolen

If there is a chance you may cross paths with a car thief, give them your keys. Don’t try to be Batman! Call the police immediately, and you may end up getting your car back.

Corvette Stingray Reaches 200 MPH on Texas Highway

Corvette Stingray reaches 200 mph
The Corvette Stingray, along with modifications, has pushed the capabilities of the Corvette a step further.

Nehls racing fans, don’t get any bright ideas, but the 2014 Corvette Stingray reaches 200 mph with a HPE600 kit.

On December 11, American tuner Hennessy took the Chevy sports car for a spin on Houston’s Grand Parkway, which the Texas Departments of Transportation and Safety closed down for the event.

The HPE600 package includes a Nitrous Express nitrous oxide system that gives the Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 engine some extra zip. The end result was John Hennessy test driving the Corvette at a top speed of 200.6 mph with 700 brake horsepower at 6,500 rpm.

Eventually, there will be a HPE700 kit that will manage the same speed at a price of $22,500.

Nehls Chevrolet encourages you to enjoy your car, but don’t floor it on a highway that is open to traffic. Watch the video below to capture the power of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and all to has to offer.

Practice Safe Driving this Winter Season

Practice safe driving this winter
Drive safely this holiday and winter season.

While no one may mess with Texas, the upcoming season calls for drivers to practice safe driving this winter and pay special attention to their cars.

Whether you’re traveling this holiday season or heading to work on a morning of light snow, you need to be extra careful and follow these tips:

  1. Eliminate the snow and ice on your car’s roof, hood and windows.
  2. Check weather and traffic before you head out.
  3. Carry a cellphone always and let someone know where you are going.
  4. Store an emergency kit in your car with food, water, first aid, and blanket.
  5. Wear a seat belt at all times.

Also, remember that you are not the only person on the road. You also have to look out for other drivers as well because there will be accidents.

  1. Don’t follow a car too closely.
  2. Turn headlights on when out in stormy conditions.
  3. Drive at slow speeds when on icy roads and bridges.
  4. Let off the gas if your car starts to slide.
  5. Be courteous to others. They don’t enjoy being out in the weather either.
